The Algarve region of Portugal is rich in history.
Romans, Muslims and Christians have occupied the Algarve
throughout the ages and many of the artefacts left by
these civilizations still remain today. In fact,
evidence of human settlements in the Algarve go as far
back as the Neolithic period.
Five hundred years of Moorish influence have left the
most recognizable imprint upon the region. Algarve is
derived from the Moorish term: Al-Gharb, meaning The
West. In fact, many Algarvian town and village names
have their origins in the Moorish occupation of the
territory, which occurred from the 8th to the 13th
century. This influence is additionally visible in the
region's agriculture, architecture and cuisine.
• Algarve
The Algarve enjoys the best climate in Europe. With only
a short period of rainfall ( between November and March)
and long hours of sunshine (the highest in Europe).
During the summer months, temperatures are high, with
water temperatures of around 22°C.
The Algarve climate is influenced by continental Europe,
North Africa, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean.
Average temperatures in the Algarve vary between 15ºC
and 31°C, almost never falling below zero in the winter
months.

Due to its location, bordered by both land and sea,
Algarve
resorts enjoy good transport connections. Various
international airlines, including the low cost carriers,
fly regularly to the Algarve, via
Faro
Airport. The Algarve also benefits from a recently
modernized road network, making road travel around the
region uncomplicated. Rail travelers in the region have
easy access to the Portuguese rail service (CP - Comboios de Portugal) which links the Algarve with the
rest of Portugal and beyond.

• Albufeira
Albufeira is one of Portugal's most famous tourist
cities in the Faro district of Algarve. Since the 1960's
when it first became popular as a holiday destination
with tourists from northern Europe, it has developed
from a picturesque fishing town into a bustling holiday
resort. Its history stretches back
to Roman times when it was known as "Baltum". The Moors,
who occupied the town in the 8th century, renamed it Al-Buhera,
which means 'The Castle on the Sea'.
Albufeira, which lies just forty minutes drive from the
the Algarve's international airport, Faro, can be
divided into two main areas of interest: Albufeira old
town and Albufeira new town.
Albufeira old town retains much of this Algarve resort's
initial character, with winding narrow roads leading
down to the popular Fisherman's Beach and its
many bars and cafes. The central square has undergone a
facelift in the last year and has now re-opened to the
many tourists and shoppers who visit Albufeira old town
during the day to explore its market stalls and shops.
At night, Albufeira old town's famous "Street of Bars"
or "Rua dos Bares" as it is
known locally, is the focal point for party goers of all
ages. Bars catering to every taste and nationality line
the "street" which also plays home to street
entertainers from every corner of the planet.
Albufeira new town is where the majority of the resort's
services are located. Hotels, shopping centres and local
government buildings (Camara de Albufeira)
have spread east from the old town centre along with the
city's tourist infrastructure. In recent years the
resort has seen massive growth in the real estate sector
with an endless number of apartment blocks springing up
along the coast to Olhos D'Agua and beyond. In spite of
this, Albufeira has not suffered the over development
that plagued the Spanish Costas in the 70's and 80's and
still remains an attractive destination for those
looking for
inexpensive Algarve holiday accommodation at any time of
the year.
Expansion to the west of Albufeira has come in the form
of the city's new Marina ( A Marina de Albufeira) which
provides an additional centre for recreation, with many
high class bars and eateries catering to an
international and domestic clientele. The marina is
distinctively modern in design and is
already famous for its pastel coloured apartments which
contrast sharply with the Moorish influences that have
left their mark on the architecture of Albufeira old
town.
Albufeira has some 23
beaches, many of which hold the
coveted European Blue Flag for environmental cleanliness
and quality. With so many beaches, it is still possible
to find a secluded spot on the lesser known ones even in
the height of the summer and with the Portuguese
government enforcing all Algarve beach bars to conform
to elevated standards in recent years, there is always a
good level of cuisine to be found beach-side. All of the
usual Algarve Sports
and beach activities are on offer in Albufeira including
the Algarve's most famous sporting pastime: golf. The
city of Vilamoura, recently voted Europe's premier golf
destination, lies just 15 minutes drive to the east of
Albufeira but there are still a couple of good quality
courses close to central Albufeira itself.
Close to Albufeira lies the village of Guia which,
famous for its Chicken Piri Piri restaurants, is now
equally as celebrated amongst wine buffs as the home
of Sir Cliff Richard's
Vida Nova Wine. Guia is also the
venue for the Algarve Shopping Centre where you can find
everything from designer shops to ten pin
bowling; a cinema complex and a large restaurant hall.
Investors take note: Guia and the surrounding areas of
Gale and Salgados are becoming highly sought
after as locations for
holiday homes and other
residential properties. Similarly, another neighbouring
village, Olhos de Agua, has much to offer the tourist
in terms of its sandy beach and fish restaurants and is
also experiencing good
property growth.

period is considered as being so. Minimum Age -
23 years old with two years minimum driving
experience required. Documents Required -
Drivers Licence valid in European Union and
Identity Card or Passport. Insurance - Rates
include unlimited public liability and collision
with a deductible amount (C.D.W.) of: Groups A,
B, C, D = 450 Euros/ Groups E, F, G = 750 Euros/
Groups H, I, J = 1000 Euros/ Groups L, M = 1250
Euros/ Groups N, O = 1500 Euros. Optional extra
insurance, covering against vandalism and
reducing the deductibles above, can be obtained
by paying a daily rate (T.P.).Travel Assistance
- All of our vehicles have 24 hour assistance.
All passengers can be insured (P.A.I) from
around 1.5 Euros per day (optional). Please
